FC Gold Pride Defeats CAL 6-1 In Preseason Exhibition Match

By: FC Gold Pride Thursday, March 12, 2009

(March 11, 2009)- FC Gold Pride, Women’s Professional Soccer’s (WPS) Bay Area team opened its exhibition schedule with a 6-1 win over the Golden Bears of Cal on Wednesday night.

In front of a packed house at the Mustang Soccer Complex in Danville, Calif., the Pride took the field for the first of five preseason exhibition matches.

Cal pressured the Pride early on in the match creating scoring opportunities but, couldn’t quite put one away. After settling into the game, the Pride took charge scoring all six of their goals in the first half. Carrie Dew scored the first goal of the game putting away a great ball served by Milbrett on a corner kick in the 13 minute of the game. Utah’s Liz Bogus scored her first of two goals in the 16th minute of the game, assisted by Lindsay Massengail. 1999 Women’s World Cup Soccer stars were active in the game as Milbrett connected with Brandi Chastain in the 19th minute for the Pride’s third goal of the half. In the 21st minute, Eriko Arakawa, in only her second day with the Pride, scored a goal off a terrific pass from Milbrett. After assisting three of her teammates, Milbrett took one in on her own, scoring unassisted in the 37th minute of the first half. The final goal of the game for the Pride came just before the end of the half, Bogus, assisted by Arakawa, put away her second goal of the match in the 44th minute.

Alex Morgan prevented Cal from being shut out of the match, scoring the lone goal for the Golden Bears to open the second half. Cal tightened up its defense after the scoring frenzy in the first half and prevented the Pride from scoring at all in the second half.

The Pride will have an off day on Thursday before returning to training camp on Friday in preparation for the team’s next exhibition match in Los Angeles against Marta and the Los Angeles Sol.
